The Intermediate programme at HFA is for students who have completed a foundation or beginner course — or who already have practical sewing experience — and are ready to work at a professional level. Over six months, you will master the technical skills that separate a competent sewer from a true designer.
This programme picks up where the basics end. You will learn to draft and manipulate patterns with precision, construct tailored garments from scratch, work with structural undergarments, and develop a personal design identity in streetwear. By graduation, you will be capable of taking a client brief from concept to a finished, professionally constructed garment.
Precise measurement techniques for all body types — accounting for posture, asymmetry, and fit adjustments that produce garments that feel made-to-measure.
Drafting slopers and blocks directly from measurements — bodice, sleeve, trouser, and skirt — without relying on commercial patterns.
Moving, merging, and converting darts to create design lines, ease, and fullness — and grading patterns across multiple sizes.
Full construction of a structured blazer — interfacing, lining, collar, lapels, and bound buttonholes — to professional ready-to-wear standards.
Reading trend reports, building mood boards, and translating cultural references into original garment concepts with a clear design direction.
Producing hoodies, cargo trousers, oversized silhouettes, and co-ord sets — with a focus on construction quality and finishing for a commercial market.
Sketching and presenting streetwear collections — proportions, silhouette drawing, and flat technical drawings for production.
Styling finished pieces for presentation, photography, and social media — building a visual identity for a streetwear brand.
From Victorian foundations to modern bodycon — understanding how structural undergarments have shaped fashion history and continue to influence contemporary design.
Selecting and applying boning types, constructing boning channels, and engineering garments that hold their shape without compromising comfort or wearability.
