Programme Overview

The Advanced programme is the culmination of everything HFA teaches. Students who reach this level have already mastered fundamentals and intermediate technique — here, they develop the specialist skills that define a designer's career: corsetry, couture bridal construction, digital illustration, and the business acumen to turn craft into a sustainable livelihood.

Advanced students work on real-level briefs, produce graduation showcase pieces, and complete the Fashion Business Class — leaving HFA not just as skilled technicians but as confident, business-literate creative professionals ready for the industry.

01 Corsetry & Contouring
Advanced Boning & Channel Construction

Working with spiral steel, flat steel, and synthetic boning types — constructing channels, casings, and closures for garments that hold structure through hours of wear.

Contouring for Every Body Type

Engineering garments that enhance and contour different body shapes — waist reduction, hip emphasis, bust support — without sacrificing comfort or movement.

Victorian to Contemporary Corsetry

Tracing the technical and aesthetic evolution of corsetry — from 19th-century foundation garments to modern structural fashion pieces worn as outerwear.

Embellishment & Finishing

Lace overlay, boning covers, eyelet and lacing systems, and decorative finishing techniques that elevate a corset from construction to couture.

02 Bridal Wear Construction
Gown Silhouettes & Architecture

Ball gown, A-line, mermaid, column, and empire silhouettes — understanding how each is constructed, supported, and fitted to the body for a perfect bridal look.

Lace Placement & Appliqué

Cutting, positioning, and hand-stitching lace and beaded appliqués — the time-intensive, detail-driven work that separates couture bridal from ready-to-wear.

Undergarment Architecture

Petticoats, crinolines, boning structures, and built-in cups — the internal engineering that makes a bridal gown stand, flow, or hold its shape on the big day.

Fittings, Alterations & Client Delivery

Managing the full bridal process — initial consultation, multiple fittings, last-minute alterations, and delivering a finished gown to a client's exact expectations.

03 Digital Illustration
Digital Fashion Sketching

Translating hand sketches into polished digital illustrations — using industry tools to produce presentation-ready fashion plates for clients, lookbooks, and proposals.

Technical Flat Drawings

Producing accurate technical flats — the standardised garment drawings used for production briefs, pattern instructions, and manufacturing communication.

Signature Advanced Module

The Fashion Business Class

Every Advanced student at HFA completes the Fashion Business Class — a comprehensive module covering everything you need to turn your design skills into a sustainable, profitable career. Built from real industry experience, this class addresses the questions most fashion schools never answer.

Pricing & Costing

How to price your work correctly — fabric costs, labour, overhead, and profit margins that keep your business alive.

Building Your Brand

Naming, visual identity, social media positioning, and the story that makes clients choose you over every other designer.

Client Management

Contracts, deposits, consultation processes, managing revisions, and handling difficult client situations professionally.

Scaling Your Business

When and how to take on staff, expand your offer, move into wholesale, or build a retail brand from your atelier.

Portfolio & Lookbook

Producing a professional portfolio and lookbook — the essential tools for attracting high-value clients and collaborations.

Social Media for Designers

Building a content strategy that consistently attracts clients — without spending your creative energy chasing algorithms.
